How Clean Must My Recyclables Be?
♦ As a general rule, for things like bottles and aluminum products, a quick rinse is usually adequate, unless it has a lot of thick and sticky residue. Rinsing does not need to be perfect. Don’t worry about getting every single spot of residue off, because that uses a lot of water!
♦ Grease and oil make cardboard and paper unrecyclable, so pizza boxes covered in grease aren’t fit for the recycling bin. However, if the box is mostly clean with just a few specks of grease, you’re fine to recycle it.
♦ In most cases, you can simply shake out bags before recycling them. Only plastic bags with a #2 or #4 can be recycled if they are clean, dry and empty.
It’s very important to sort your recycling correctly and make the process as simple as possible. When our recyclables aren’t sorted correctly, they could end up in the landfill, defeating the whole purpose!! Plus, we get charged more for the service.
