Highway 89 Sidewalk Improvements
Project Announcement:
Highway 89 North Sidewalk Improvements
The City of Mayflower will be applying for an 80/20 TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) matching grant in January 2022 to allow us to start construction of a long awaited sidewalk project.
The City of Mayflower received an ARDOT TAP grant in 2016 to construct a sidewalk along Highway 89 North from the Town Center of Mayflower to the Mayflower Middle School. The 20% matching funds have not been available to start this project because the funding for the new I-40/Hwy 89 Interchange and Railroad Overpass and Realignment project was the City‘s number 1 priority.
Since that project is now under construction and the 20% match has been provided, we now have the opportunity to pursue another important project. We are applying for an additional TAP grant though the Central Arkansas MPO– Metroplan to design and construct the proposed sidewalk. If this grant for Phase 2 is awarded, we will proceed with the design and construction in 2022 of this needed sidewalk that will connect the Town Center area of Mayflower to the school facilities on the western edge of Mayflower.
This sidewalk connection will provide pedestrian access between City facilities (City Hall, Frank Pearce Memorial Park and Mayflower City Center), retail and banking locations and the Mayflower school facilities. The proposed sidewalk will connect to existing sidewalks at the Mayflower First Baptist Church. We are excited to begin the project and know that it will be a tremendous benefit to our citizens with regard to pedestrian connectivity and healthy living.
Assistance on this project is being provided by Mike Watson, Business Development Manager with Halff Associates and former Mayor of Maumelle.
